Law of Superposition
By Noah and Kyler
The law of superposition sates that the rock layer under the existing one is older and any layer above is younger. Fossils found in the rocks are younger than the actual rock.
lava or magma can enter and pass through rock layers. If the igneous rock comes out of the ground it is called an extrusion. If the igneous rock only breaks through rock layers and doesn't break the surface is an intrusion. The rock layers can be separated or some layers can even be missing. If a layer is split or missing it is an unconformity. Missing layers are gaps in the rock and make it a little more challenging to date the rock.
We chose to make this part of the website about The Law of Superposition because it was the best unit we did all 8th grade (in our opinion). We liked how you can use the relative age to help date rocks. We are really good at math and so it was easy and fun to try and date the rocks just right. With the long year of science that unit was the one that we remembered most of all and feel that it would be the best to inform people about. Of all the units we think if you needed to learn this one most.
