Geology Rocks
By Alexander and Quentin
Our favorite science topic this year was geology. I know the most about this topic and it really caught my interest and we really enjoyed it. We liked looking at the geological time scale in our book and we enjoyed leaning about it. We also liked learning and working on relative and radioactive dating. Me and Quentin learned a lot that unit and I don't know about him but that section is where my best grades came. I know that we also really enjoyed ecosystems because of all the habitats and ecosystems we learned about. Another topic that I found interesting was disease and biotechnology because I have always had an interest in viruses but that interest is not as big as the one I have on geology. Being an archeologist would be very cool and I think I would have fun doing that. Finding fossils, discovering old rock layers, that, would be cool. There are many fields of work in geology and that is positive and intriguing.
An important part of geology is fossils. Fossils are the remains of extinct organisms that geologists study. Index fossils are a type of fossil of animals that went extinct quickly and can help determine the age of rocks around it. The law of determining the age of rocks is called the Law of Superposition. The Law of Superposition tells us that the youngest rock layers are on top and the oldest are on bottom. There are also many other types of fossils. Something that is similar to a fossil is a trace. Traces are marks left behind by animals telling about the types of activities it did. Sometimes fossils of animals can be preserved in something like amber or tar. There are also different ways to date fossils. Relative dating is when you get near the age by comparing it to rocks around it. Radioactive dating is a way to get the exact age. The exact age of a fossil is called the Absolute age. The age of the Earth and different periods of time is shown on the Geologic Time Scale. The Earth according to the Geologic Time Scale is 4.54 billion years old. Geology has been a fun subject to learn about. I thought it was interesting learning more about fossils and how to date them. My favorite part of Geology was the Law of Superposition. I thought it was quick, easy, and fun. I liked learning about Geology this year.
